Manjushri Kadampa Meditation Centre is a favourite venue for thousands of people each year who attend the many Buddhist meditation retreats and courses the centre organises.
Housed in a large historic building set in seventy acres of woodland that touches the shores of Morecambe Bay, the centre is home to the magnificent Kadampa Temple for World Peace the first Temple built for the purpose of teaching modern Buddhism.
At the Spring and Summer Festivals there is a chance for everyone to enjoy a special course and meditation retreat at the centre. One of the well loved Buddhist meditation retreats in the UK, these events always promise to be inspiring for everyone involved.
The Festivals offer an opportunity to receive teachings and meditation instructions from qualified Western teachers, which are followed by short, focused meditation retreats with a chance to practise the instructions in five daily sessions.
In his book Modern Buddhism, Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso the founder of Manjushri KMC and the annual International Kadampa Festivals explains what meditation is:
What is meditation? Meditation is an action of mind whose nature is single-pointed concentration and whose function is to make the mind peaceful and calm. We want to be happy all the time, even during our dreams. How can we do this? We can do this through training in meditation because meditation makes our mind become peaceful, and when our mind is peaceful we are happy all the time, even if our external conditions are poor. On the other hand, when our mind is not peaceful we are not happy, even if our external conditions are excellent. We can understand this through our own experience. Since the actual method to make our mind peaceful is training in meditation, we should apply effort to training in meditation. Whenever we meditate, we are performing an action or karma that causes us to experience peace of mind in the future. From this we can understand how meditation practice is important.
